Why book a cheap beach villa in the Maldives?

When they think about the Maldives, most people dream about water villas and finding the ocean right at their doorsteps. This is the image that’s the most obvious to everyone, it’s a great marketing tactic that has worked for years. But realistically speaking, these villas are not for everyone.

For starters, most resorts don’t allow families with children in overwater bungalows due to safety reasons. They cannot provide safety mechanisms to keep everyone safe so they just prevent it from the get-go. Beach villas on the other hand don’t have this limitation unless you book a beach bungalow with a pool in the Maldives. In this case, you can usually book the place, but you’ll have to take care of your children while using the pool.

Another reason why some people might prefer a beach house on a resort island would be the cost. While all the amenities will be the same, the cost for a beach villa versus a water suite will be significantly lower, thus allowing you to enjoy more time in this beautiful paradise. As most villas are located straight on the beach, the access to the ocean is as fast as from the water villa, so the comfort is really the same from this point of view.

And a third reason to choose an affordable beach villa in the Maldives is that some people won’t like the noise the water makes when sleeping right above it. While some people love the sound of waves for their night’s sleep, others would rather have a silent night to be able to rest. With a beach house, you can choose to allow the sound inside by opening windows or keep it out by shutting everything down. You don’t have this luxury in a water villa as the sound goes everywhere above the ocean.

Tips for searching affordable beach bungalows in the Maldives

Of course, I have done most of the work for you, as I personally checked more than 100 resorts and compared their prices online. But this won’t work unless you’re willing to do some research yourself as well. Check out my tips below and set yourself up for success on this amazing trip.

A great tip to save money while in the Maldives is to use a cashback app like WayAway Plus . As they currently provide options to get money back from flights and accommodation, and both these expenses are big for a trip here, you’ll most probably get your money back for the yearly subscription right from this trip. Imagine how much you’ll get back for every other trip you do this year.

For the best chance to find a budget beach villa in the Maldives, you have to always compare prices. I know it sounds stupid, as the same room with the same amenities should cost the same no matter where you book it, but we all know it doesn’t work like that so always be smart and compare prices. In my experience, Agoda usually has better prices than Booking for destinations in Asia, but if you have the Genius status on Booking, you can get a better rate. Your Booking account can also be linked to your WayAway account and you can get a better discount as well.

You can always check the hotels’ page as well. While I know this is tedious, some hotels have great discounts on their websites from time to time. Radisson and Constance Hotels are known to do this sometimes, so better check them as well before you book. But if you have some wallet money in your Booking account or some discount code for Agoda, compare all of these options before you decide.

When traveling to the Maldives, don’t forget to check your meal plans as well. Each island is a resort so you either buy a more comprehensive meal plan or you pay a-la-carte, which is never a good idea at their prices, considering that there’s really no competition on the island to make the market adjust prices naturally. Therefore it’s a good idea to prioritize offers that include at least half board, or include the price of meals in your final budget estimation as well.

If you’re not a foodie and don’t drink that much alcohol, half-board is probably quite enough. You can have a late breakfast and early dinner and order a few glasses of wine from the menu. If you’re enjoying a cocktail by the pool every day and cannot survive between breakfast and dinner without snacking at least, then all-inclusive is a great option as the cost of drinks will add up quickly if bought by piece.

For each accommodation, check the price of the transfer as well. This transportation can sometimes cost you more than the long flight that brought you here, so take it into account as well when choosing your Maldivian resort. The caveat here is that islands further away from the airport will have a better-looking environment and will be quieter, but will cost more as well, so weigh this in when making your choice.

Avoid going to this destination during the high season if you want better prices for everything, from accommodation to airfare. While the best season to visit the Maldives is from November to March, avoid late December stays and Valentine’s Day period altogether. This will ensure you get a better deal with minimal discomfort for you.

An even better idea is to go on shoulder season or low season, but in this case, you are risking getting to know the wet season in the Maldives. While it doesn’t mean you’ll have heavy rain every day, it does mean that you have a higher chance of this happening. Take this advice with a grain of salt if you think this might ruin your vacation.

Another great way to save money on your Maldives trip is to combine different types of rooms in the same vacation. You can get the best of everything for a little while, so think about combining a classic room, a cheap beach villa, and an affordable overwater bungalow in the Maldives on the same vacation, or any other mix that sounds good to you. You’ll get a good idea of all of them like this and will spare you some money as well.

While it’s not exactly the same experience, local islands in the Maldives have started to provide nice and very affordable options. Some of them offer rooms right on the bikini beach or rooftop pools with gorgeous views of the ocean, and you can even find small islands with just a few accommodation options and a mostly pristine environment as well, as the over-tourism hasn’t affected them yet (please keep them this way though as we all want to enjoy it).

And if you’re very brave, you can wait for last-minute deals. Even big-name hotels don’t like having empty rooms so you can be brave and wait it out. When you approach the date of your departure, you can check either Agoda, Booking, or Secret Escapes for amazing prices. All of them have filters for discounted offers and you can snag a great value-for-money offer this way. But you have to be extremely brave about it, and I know it’s not easy for everyone (over-planner here as well, I know my people).

And last, but not least, check out my other resources that can help you find cheap beach villas in the Maldives. I have a great post about money-saving tips when traveling to the Maldives and a short and sweet eBook full of tips on saving money while away so that you can travel more without increasing your budget, which you can find below.

The view you can have from cheap beach villas in the Maldives

A short note about partners of Booking, and then I’ll leave you with the list. This is a new option I have seen lately and it has VERY small prices compared to Booking itself. I’m talking three to four times cheaper than the official price. While this sounds awesome, I don’t yet know how reliable this is, as Booking clearly states they don’t offer any kind of guarantee or coverage in case this happens to be a scam.

If you want to check out this option though, you can book your room and remember my last tip from above: have a last-minute option available to you from Booking, Agoda, or Secret Escapes. In the end, if you get there and discover you don’t have a room, as long as you have internet and an easy time moving around, you can always get a cheap room on Male for the first night and find a good solution for the next morning.
