About The Maldives

Location and geography

This gorgeous archipelago is located in the middle of the Indian Ocean, right at the Equator. This makes it have great weather in most of the year, with just a dry and wet season to be aware of. The average monthly temperature is constant throughout the year, so going in the wet season can be a valid way of visiting.

Islands are gathered in atolls, circle-shaped areas that used to be the top of mountains. Nowadays, these islands only have beaches, and the highest altitude is about 1.5 meters (4.9 feet), which is even shorter than I am.

Currency & costs

The official currency in the Maldives is the Maldivian Rufiyaa, but USD and EURO are widely accepted. Especially if staying on a resort island, you will mostly use USD or EURO to pay for everything.

The costs can vary based on a series of factors: where are you staying (resort or local island), what activities you do, and what type of amenities you want to enjoy. There are a few ways to spend less in the Maldives, check out the post below about saving money in the Maldives.

Visa & customs

Almost everyone that arrives in the Maldives can get a visa on arrival, thus making it an easy destination to get to. When it comes to customs, just be aware that you’re not allowed to import any alcohol in the country, or bring religious or anti-religious materials of any kind.

Local culture

The Maldivian people are some of the nicest ones you will ever know. They’re kind and generous, and make you feel like a king, no matter where you go. Still, you have to be aware of some local customs you need to abide by.

Most of the country is Muslim, so you have to abide by some rules. Mostly, you won’t find any alcohol on local islands, you can wear a bikini bathing suit only on the dedicated bikini beaches (or all beaches if staying on a resort island) and you won’t be able to eat pork.
